I’m due to have my IUD removed at the beginning of March but due to national lockdown my local doctors surgery is not running their contraception clinic currently. Will the IUD still be effective after its 5 year lifespan?
The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health Care which issues clinical guidance on contraception in the UK has said that all of the available evidence is that the hormone coil and the copper IUD will continue to be effective for 1 year after their current lifespan - but they also say that there is not enough research to prove this.
So the current advice is to keep the method in place for up to a year after it is due to be changed and consider using additional contraception e.g. condoms.
I agree that this is rather vague - but this is all the evidence that we have at the moment.
