Mirena coil farewell indecisiveness

Hello! I am at the end of my term with Mirena and I am unsure if I would like to continue with another Mirena or if I would like to let my body rest.

I got the Mirena about 4 years and 7 months ago for heavy periods, painful cramping and to avoid pregnancy. For four years, I basically had no periods. In the past four or five months, I’ve had heavy cramping and light periods that last around 2 weeks.

Even though I’ve really enjoyed the Mirena, I’m wondering if this is a legitimate question to ask: should go hormone-free for a little while? My partner and I are pretty sexually active and I would want to use another birth control method.

Thank you!

Hello @Nanuq

Apologies for my slow response, I am just back from holiday and catching up.

There is no health reason to have a break from the Mirena if you are happy with it. From a health perspective it is fine to continue so you would need to make a decision based on how this and other contraceptive methods might effect how you feel and how they fit with your lifestyle.

You can compare options here https://sh24.org.uk/contraception/compare?

Many thanks
