My friend had an ectopic pregnancy after continuously taking emergency contraception. Does emergency contraception cause ectopic pregnancy, if so how and what is the likelihood of it happening?
Thanks for your question. This is some of the evidence that we have on the morning after pill and ectopic pregnancy.
One study of 55,000 people who had used the morning after pill found 5 cases of ectopic pregnancy.
Most studies of pregnancy after the morning after pill have found that the rate of ectopic pregnancy in people who have taken the morning after pill is the same as the risk of ectopic pregnancy in the rest of the population.
So, the evidence that we have suggests that the risk of ectopic pregnancy after taking the morning after pill is very small indeed.
Hope that is helpful.
