My daughter is negatively effected by the hormonal IUD and a smaller non-hormonal IUD is not made available. Can a doctor order the right size IUD from somewhere else? Otherwise, her only option is to have tubal ligation.
There are two hormonal IUDs. They contain different doses of the hormone Levonorgestrel and they are slightly different sizes. The side effect profiles of the two are supposed to be similar.
Both should be available at contraceptive services in the UK and yes a GP could write a prescription for either of them to be picked up at a pharmacy and fitted in general practice.
